Psoriasis is caused by an overreaction of the immune system, that causes skin inflammation and skin flaking. In normal and healthy skin, new skin cells grow and shed within about 4 weeks. The skin cells affected by the psoriasis grow at a very rapid rate and do not shed like that of healthy skin cells. Therefore causing a build up of excess skin, which is referred to as psoriasis plaques. Pronouncation “suh-ry-uh-sus”.
Most of us fear that psoriasis may be contagious, but it is not. Researchers however are still unsure how the disease pass through family members or the genes. Psoriasis is not contagious chronic skin condition. It mostly affects the adults rather than younger children and teenagers, but it does not mean there are no situations where it hits these age groups as it happens as well. Because of its un-natural and gross appearance , people with psoriasis often feel very ashamed and embarrassed and try to conceal its appearance from public view. A clear understanding of what the skin disorder, psoriasis is and what can cause the condition will help in understanding the treatment methods available and medications used to control the skin inflammation..
When a person actually has psoriasis, these are some of the conditions that trigger its flare-ups. (1.) Stress (2.) There are certain types of mental illness with certain medications used in the treatment (3.) Cigarette smoking (particularly in women) (4.) Certain medications (especially high blood pressure medications or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). (5.) A cold and/or a very dry weather.
Psoriasis symptoms and its conditions may seem to come and go, even without treatment. Also, some people only have a very mild case while others experience far more severe symptoms..
In severe cases of psoriasis, people can experience arthritic symptoms known as psoriatic arthritis. People with this type of psoriasis, complain of swollen and painful joints. Severe psoriasis may even causes a loss of finger and toe nails, as a result of dead skin building up beneath both surfaces and expelling the nail from the nail bed.
Proper caring of the skin is always a must for those with psoriasis. This includes keeping the skin as moist as possible throughout the day. Psoriasis is a chronic condition and, it may go into remission for long periods of time, in general it is a condition which one must live with forever.
People with severe cases of this psoriasis condition experience depression and a feeling of low-self-esteem. After a thorough research of the chronic skin condition, especially on severe cases, individuals who suffered those conditions have problems engaging themselves in daily actvities as that on cancer patients and those suffering from heart disease. Because stress largely contributes to psoriasis, these conditions can lead to seemingly never-ending cycles of psoriasis flare-ups.
